Health & Physical Education Students Host Health Fair in Jersey City Public School 17

On January 25, students from the Department of Health & Physical Education and the Health & Fitness Club hosted a Health Fair at Public School 17 in Jersey City. More than 400 elementary school students and their parents participated in activities that promoted mindfulness, wellness and physical activity. It was a fun event and a great time was had by all!

Professors of Physical Education and Mathematics Collaborate in Conference Session

James Clayton, Ed.D. ’71, associate professor of education; Michael Finetti, Ed.D., assistant professor of education and director of special education programs; Jay Garrels, Ph.D., chair of health & physical education; and Rebecca Conley, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics; recently presented a workshop at the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Annual Convention in Atlantic City, N.J. The breakout session was titled, “Math and Physical Education: Perfect Together.” This multidisciplinary team of professors offered ideas for incorporating math concepts and skills into a cooperative physical education setting. Special Education accommodations and modifications were also addressed during this time. Attendees participated in group activities and shared their own experiences working with an interdisciplinary curriculum. The session was enthusiastically received by NJEA members.

On Saturday, September 22, the Health and Fitness Club and members of the Department of Health and Physical Education volunteered at the Fall Festival at local Public School 17. �鶹��ýAVPeter’s University students promoted mindfulness by running a series of events that each elementary student completed as part of the day’s health awareness initiative. In honor of Public Health Week, �鶹��ýAVPeter’s health and physical education students, along with students from the Health and Fitness Club participated in the Family Health and Fitness Night at PS 39. �鶹��ýAVPeter’s students offered several hours of fitness-related games and activities and sent every school-age student home with a fitness-related toy and a bag of fruit. Two children’s bikes were given away, along with 24 ceramic MyPlates depicting optimal portions of macro-nutrients.
